What is a blister?
A blister is a (plastic) shell that fits tightly around the packed product. Blisters are usually transparent and combine protection with an attractive product presentation. Customers can see the product but they can't touch it. The blister format makes shoplifting more difficult.
The blister process
Blistering is the welding process in which the plastic shell are welded to the backs. That can be a cardboard card, a flat or moulded piece of plastic. For every order, adapted weld and liner parts (weld and liner tooling) are made prior to blistering. During the welding, the shell lies with the opening facing upwards in the liner tooling.
Types
- Standard type: these blisters cannot hang or stand upright.
- Blisters with suspension holes: produce with one or more suspension holes (eurolocks).
- Upright blisters: with a little foot so they remain in an upright position.

Heat seal blister
The shell is welded to the back by heating and pressure. Usually it is made of cardboard. Sometimes coated foil is used.
- most prevalent kind of blister ;
- relatively inexpensive production technique ;
- separable materials (plastic shell and cardboard back).
High-frequency blister
The shell is attached to the plastic back by high-frequency welding. The molecules of the shell and back are made to oscillate. This heats them up and they fuse together.
- mainly for packaging relatively expensive products ;
- good, high quality appearance ;
- theft-resistant;
- no coated back needed.
Sliding blister
A cardboard card is slipped between the folded edges of the blister. It may also be stitched to the blister so that it doesn't slide off.
- no weld necessary ;
- simple packaging with relatively little packaging work.
Folding blister
The top and bottom of the blister are connected by a hinge. These blisters often have snap studs that prevent the blister from opening up.
Kliknokken
- no weld is necessary ;
- ideal for packaging with a bottom and a cover (for instance cake/pies boxes).
Cardboard-cardboard blister
The shell and the rug are made from coated cardboard.
- only one type of material needed ;
- environmentally-friendly image.
Sandwich blister
Two (printed) cards form the front and back of the blister. They have a coating on the inside and are glued together. The blister shell is sandwiched between the cards.
- ideal for dispensers ;
- high-quality appearance through imprint on the front and back and by the presence of sealed edges.
Standard blister
Blister manufacturers often offer a series of blisters with standard measurements.
- ideal for customers who don't want much packaging work ;
- no expensive tooling costs.
Customized blister
These blisters are individualized in accordance with the customer’s wishes (for example, finished off with a logo).
